Cool Summer Ideas - Kids Fun
Try our cool ideas for hot days and make the most of the Kiwi summer
Bubble, bubble, pop!
Take a sunny day, a little dishwashing detergent, add water and you've got instant slippery fun. Get out there and get lathered up! Use one cup of water to two cups of dishwashing liquid to make your bubble solution.
There are heaps of ideas for bubbly fun - from a slippery slide, to egg-beater bubble races and coloured bubble paintings. But for the ultimate, you can't go past the Human Bubble. Check out this bubble party styled and hosted by Nicole Davis from me oh my blog.
She filled a plastic paddling pool with bubble solution and got the kids to stand in the middle of a hula hoop. Raise the hoop up and the kids are encased in a gigantic bubble.
When life hands you lemons… you make lemonade! This could be one of your kids' first forays into entrepreneurism.
We adore this simple lemonade stand made by American mum and blogger, Christina Roy, especially her son's sign offering a free joke!
1 ½ cups sugar
6 cups water
Grill lemons on the bbQ and once they're nice and soft, set them aside to cool.
Meanwhile, simmer a cup of water and the sugar in a saucepan until sugar has dissolved, being careful not to boil. Squeeze the juice from the lemons into a jug, add the sugar syrup and stir in the remaining water. Add ice and sliced lemons, serve and enjoy!
If you're heading off on a road trip, load up your playlist with some of these classic songs of summer. There are some old-school ones for Mum and Dad and a little bit of fun for the kids.
- Summer Nights, Olivia Newton John and John Travolta
- The Boys of Summer, Don Henley
- California Girls, Katy Perry
- Walkin' on Sunshine, Katrina and the Waves
- Splish Splash, Bobby Darin
- Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
- Beautiful Day, U2
- Why Does Love Do This To Me?, The Exponents
- Halo, Beyoncé
- Alright, Supergrass
- Rockin' Robin, The Jackson 5
- Heatwave, Martha and The Vandellas
- Everything's Gonna Be Alright, The Babysitters Circus
- Summer Love, Justin Timberlake
The A-Z of your place
Take a trip into your town or city centre armed with a camera and a journal. Start searching out things that begin with each letter of the alphabet, say "A" for archway, "B" for bus and so on.
Water, water, everywhere
There's nothing like some water play to turn up the summer time giggles! Here are our favourite ideas:
- Water balloon piñata
- Sprinkler under the trampoline
- Water pistol fight
- Sponge toss
- Frozen Feet (put ice cube in the paddling pool. The kids then have to pick them up and put them in a bucket using only their feet).
- Arm your kids with a bucket of soapy water, a hose and a chamois and you get a free car wash! (If you don't trust your kids with your prized possession, have them wash their own bikes or toys).
Love your eyes
Children's eyes are particularly sensitive to UV light and childhood exposure can lead to problems later in life, such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration so it's important kids wear quality sunglasses when they're out in bright sunlight.
Living it up
Howʼs this for a way to welcome the kids home after their last day at kindy or school? Let the fun and games begin!
Summer bucket list
If you think about it it's a dream, if you write it down it's a goal. So, get the kids together and make a bucket list of all the things you'd like to do this summer.
How to apply sunscreen correctly
If your kids are likely to be cooling off at the beach, pool or even under the sprinkler, they'll need a good SPF30+ sunscreen that offers water resistance. If there's no water play then you should still opt for a SPF30+ but you can use a lotion with a lighter feel.
How much to use? Well, the Cancer Society says you need around 35ml of sunscreen (about the amount in a shot glass) for your whole body, including face, hands, neck and ears. And you need to reapply every two hours. Think about how long a bottle of sunscreen lasts at your place. If you're applying it correctly, a 400ml bottle should last just a week! And of course, the more people in the family, the more you'll need.
Also, check the expiry date. If it's past its best, throw it out!
