(swing model) i have just brought this and its working great.

However how long do i use the 1st phase for before switching to the 2nd ?

there is no guideline in the instruction manual and the website says nothing too

Once you feel letdown then push the button. If you forget to push it (which I've done before) then it changes itself after a while. If you don't feel let down then push it once you see a good flow of milk coming out.

I never bothered changing it manually unless by breasts felt uncomfortable - it switches after 2 min I think
