Topic: Depo Injection and Period / Cycle Posted: 14 February 2006 at 10:45am |
I am hoping you guys can help me with this as the Dr. was no help at all!!
I was on the depo for about a year and had my last injection 5th October 05 - next one was due 4th January o6.
We are TTC but I am waiting to get my period before I do all the cycle stuff.. What I wanted to know is if anyone has had the Depo and how long until you got your period? I have been having really bad stomach pains for about 5 days and have gone from thinking stomach bug to phantom period and back again!!
Thanx Girls

Ok, first of all I don't want to scare you or worry you or anything, as I am by no means 'average' biologically speaking. I was on Depo injections for almost two years, and it took 14 months for my period to come back. However, I know a couple of ladies who had theirs back after 3-6 months.

I am hoping after being on it for a year (short time according to my Dr - that is usless!) that it wont take TOO long to get things going again...
Lol Liz - Arna was a pill baby too!! More my forgetfulness then anything!! - Just a word of warning - research the Depo fully and throughly as I have experianced mood swings, low (to NO) sex drive etc... Just advice - Everyone is different!
Thanks Jax - I know everyone is different - I just want to be a lucky one that gets it back real quick!! (I'm impaitent!)

I'm not good for advice either - I didn't have a period for 18 mths then I had bleeding on and off for ages. But I was on the injection for over 4 years so much longer than you. I'm sure your cycles will be back to normal ASAP. And don't forget that you can ovulate before you actually have a period, so you may even get pg before you get a period (just ask Liz )
I'm totally with you on th Depo side effects tho - would never go on it again myself.
Mind you, got preg first time I had sex, then with Maya while I was on the Pill, and yet now that I actually WANT to get pg it's not happening!!

I think I have to just sit and wait!!
Does anyone know of any tests I can get done to see if I am ovulating or if anything is happening?
I 2nd that Emma - I will personally never go back on the Depo - SIL and 2 friends have got endo after being on Depo as well as all the other things I mentioned a while ago while on the Depo..
*Waiting and waiting for something to happen!*

you could try and purchase some ovulation kits, but that could get expensive waiting to see if you do ovulate. It is hard but I would try and wait till you get your first period and go from there.

And if you are going to purchase there are a couple of people on Trade Me who can sell them a lot cheaper than the pharmacy can.
Normally it would be around $20.00 for 2 months supply...around 12 tests I think it is.
However as SB said...given your position at the moment it would more than likely to be cheaper to wait for your period and go from there.

Hello,
I was on the injection for just over a year, and when I stopped, it took over a year for my periods to return. (probably not the sort of news you wnated to hear - sorry!)
I was travelling in Africa, and didnt want to go to the docs there to get my injection, so I just let it go and waited to see what happened. I wasnt ttc at the time, and really didnt mind not having AF while I was travelling - actually quite convenient for me then. But would have been annoying if I wanted to ttc.

Haha just the news I wanted to hear!! (not)! I am expection 9 months at the earliest before I get my period or be like Liz and just get pregnant before that happens!!
Jess - this is probably a STUPID question but how can I do a chart if I haven't had my period? I haven't even researched what kind of lifestyle to live if I want to get pregnant... or how to chart or anything.... Im useless!!

Hey Lena, www.fertilityfriend.com has all the info you need to chart. It tells you what to look for as signs you might be ovulating, and all about BBT (taking your temp) to confirm ovulation. Once you have ovulated you can expect your period about 2 weeks later.
Otherwise I can explain it all, but fertility friend does it better!
